Hi All,

I have recently installed Xp Pro on a new machine and I have installed a second hard drive which was used in a Xp home machine as an archive. The drive shows up correctly in the BIOS and the device manager but there is no listing of it in Windows explorer, so obviously I don't have access to my files.
Does anyone know why this is?

Regards,

Tony

have you checked the jumper settings of the drive? I had the problem a slave drive working in my old system due to the funny connection of the cables from cd player to hard drive - hard drive. Put it in a new machine and expected it to work but didnt. I then changed the jumper settings and it was fine.

Yes, I have the jumpers set OK, as I say, it appears in the device manager but not in windows explorer
In the device manager, I can populate the disk and it reads from the disk and returns the expected results
Thanks for your help

Have you checked in Disk Management, to ensure it is allocated a drive
letter?
Other than that its probably a hd cable/jumper problem

windows xp does not incorporate the drive automatically like earlier
versions. you have to go to my computer right click on it and chose manage.
computer management will then pop up. choose disk managment from under that
section. from there I beleieve you should pick the option of rescan disk and
it willadd the new drive. further help can be attained by accessing help
topics disn mangement adding disk in the windows help file. It has been
awhile since I have performed this task so I am a little fuzzy.

Thanks Robert, that has done the trick. Tricky OS this XP isnt it. Lots of non obvious tweaks
I expected that windows would just show it as a new drive
Oh! well! you live and learn
Thanks once again

Tony
