Had my Compac presario 5240 (upgraded with windows ME on top of Windows 98
with MS Word 97 and MS Works 4,5) seemingly successfully corrected by a local
company. Unfortunately in that operation several programs and most of the
fonts were loosed. The "Quick restoring CD" did not return them, nor did
reinstalling the printer and scanner. Is there somebody kind and
knowledgeable enough to inform, how to get back the fonts or how to find and
install an other manysided and usefull selection ?

There's no way anyone can answer that unless you post a list of the fonts
you're looking for. Different fonts are supplied with different
applications; and they also come from any number of other sources such as
graphics CDs, direct download, etc etc.

OK. Each font is a separate file. Mostly TTF although there are some other
formats. You usually have a set for each typeface: normal, bold, italic,
etc. There's a special folder (usually c:\windows\fonts or c:\winnt\fonts)
that contains them. You install a font either by dropping the font file into
this folder, or (better) by going to Control Panel > Fonts and selecting
Install New Font from the File menu.

Have a look for TTF files on the CDs for the software you have. The
Microsoft site lists the fonts that come with MS software. Lucida is
certainly amongst these.

You can do a Google for font sites, but many of them seem to be designed by
the same cretins that do the porn sites: there are any number of "100000
free fonts" sites that turn out to be lists of links to other sites that are
mostly lists of links.

Also, with free fonts you get what you pay for. Scrounge around for a
graphics CD (like Corel's 1 million graphics) ... you usually get a generous
set of fonts thrown in. Or if you love good typography, invest in Adobe's
Font Folio.
