My IDE hard drive went out and I had to buy another drive. Well, I bought a Serial ATA (SATA) drive which acts and boots like a SCSI drive. While installing WinXP Pro, I didn't have any hard drives connected to the onboard IDE and when I installed WinXP Pro it saw the SATA drive as E:
Having the system on drive E is not a problem for me but it wouldn't let me change it to C (presumably because the IDE controller reserving C and D?). Anyway, the OS installed just fine except Windows Explorer is missing ALL it's icon representations such as the yellow folders and drive icons when listing the contents of Drive E. Windows Explorer still functions fine but I'm a little worried that other areas may be affected in this way.
I tried changing the visual style theme but it had no effect. When I added one of my data drives back to the IDE controller (which set the drive as C
the icons in Explorer magically re-appeared even though there are no system files on C:
Is this a bug in the OS that still requires a C: to be present before it finds the files in the real location (such as Drive E)?
Best Regards,
Lon
