Missing files from desktop

Hi,

My documents on the desktop and My Documents folder suddenly disappear, they
were there when I shutdown the day before, I have tried searching for them
using Search, but turned out nothing, I have also use deleted recovery
software to search, but nothing also. Thus I believe the files are not
deleted but invisible. Please help. Thank You.

I'm running on WinXP Pro SP2.
 
Start | Run | Type: my documents | Click OK

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab |
Customize Desktop button | General tab |
Desktop icons | Select what you want on the Desktop:

My Documents
My Computer
My Network Places
Internet Explorer

Desktop icons
[[Specifies whether these Windows items will appear as icons on your
desktop. Select the check box if you want the item to appear on your
desktop; clear the check box if you do not want the item to appear on your
desktop.]]

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not missing the desktop icons, the files saved on desktop and My
Document folders are missing.

The Register Edits dont work either.
 
You have your My Documents folder?

You are missing files from your My Documents folder?

Is that correct?

Sorry if I description is unclear.

My Documents and all the icon shortcuts are on the desktop, shortcut icon
dont matter if they are not on the desktop, my concerns are the missing user
saved files such as word documents, powerpoint presentations, picture files,
excel files etc. The user saved files are saved on the desktop and My
Documents folder.

It looks like the whole user profile is deleted and recreated new, empty
desktop except for the shortcut icons and empty My Documents, but if the user
profile is new, everything should be empty, but My Recent Documents is not
empty, it contains shortcuts that has been open, up to several months ago.
