I have just purchased Windows XP Home Edition and I am
trying to install it. During the Install Preparation
stage I get the following error message "An error occurred
copying file 3145pcl.gdp to C:\$Win_Nt$.~ls\I386
\3145pcl.gdp. The file is missing. Contact your system
administrator. You may choose to retry the copy, skip
this file, or exit setup." The retry function does
nothing. When I click on skip this file it comes up with
another error message along the same line and says that it
is also missing. I am lost on what to do at this point.
Any help would be very appreciated.

Try installing xp cd,exit the info page, restart computer, boot to
xp cd (you may need to adjust in BIOS,Boot Options-Prefrences.),
once at menu screen select, install xp,new copy. This way you get
a "clean install".
