John

Here's one for someone out there: After a brief power
outage hit us last week (no more than 5 sec) while my
system (WIN 2000) was on, we now have some missing files.
An executable for Help from the Start Menu cannot be
located, there is a problem starting Outlook Express,
perhaps more that I have just not discovered yet. Anyone
have any ideas? Do I reload WIN 2000, try to restore the
Registry, etc.?

Many thanks for any input!!

Hi John,

Power Outages make strange bedfellows. You may be lucky, or, well we'll leave it at that for
now. First, will you post of all the files you think you are missing?

Try this first...
At an NT command line (Start > Run...)
"type" SFC /SCANNOW
Let it run (shouldn't take a few minutes)

At a Command Prompt (same thing as NT command line)
"type" CHKDSK /F/R
this should take upward of 30 minutes (so do it when you're hungry).

Reboot, and check out the files now. All that you thunk you was a-missin'.
This gettum back? No...? OK we can play that way.
If the files are from your OS, we can do a "repair".
Get your 4 floppies to boot with. Don't havem, you say... (You can use the CD, if you change
the boot order in your BIOS, if the CD-ROM is bootable).
Go to www.bootdisk.com and make a set with four freshly formatted floppies you have done on
an NT machine (Hint - don't do an quick format) Give each floppy a Volume name like Boot
Floppy - 1, etc.) (Mark 1/4, 2/4, etc. on the outside)
Get your Installation CD and have it ready.

Boot with floppy - 1 when the power is turned on. Go all the way thru to the last boot
Floppy and choose "R" for repair. And follow the instructions. For this repair you just
follow the prompts and boot at the conclusion. Check to see if your files have returned.

I'm afraid to go much further, not knowing which files bit the dust. Please give feedback
and I believe we can get you there, but I would make an ERD and a backup before you start,
even though the files are missing.
