i am trying to set up remote assistance between my wifes
system and my own. i am told to access the gpedit.msc
through the run dialog and it tells me it cant find the
file. what is going on and what do i do to find this file?

Gpedit.msc is only available with Windows XP Professional.

The Remote Desktop hosting feature is only available with Windows XP Pro.
You can only use Windows XP Home Edition as a client and not a host.
