Missing fcs.exe file

Your help please. While loading NTL broadband I picked up a trojan which
attached itself to the fcs.exe file. After much effort, McAfee finally got
rid of the trojan but also the file. Everytime I turn the computer on I get
the following message: cannot find C:\WINDOWS\System\fcs.exe I'd rather not
use system restore and risk doing it all again when I reload NTL. Any advice
greatly appreciated

That's probably because fcs.exe is part of the virus attack
and not part of Windows. Run msconfig.exe via Start / Run,
then click the Startup tab and untick fcs.exe.
 
Do you have J2ME Wireless Tool Kit installed? If yes uninstall and
reinstall.

There are hints of other legitimate programmes but most reports tend to
deal with the Trojan.

Is the name of the Trojan recorded in a McAfee log file?

You might try this utility to ascertain where it starts from:

Thanks Gerry, dear old ntl recommended uninstalling mcafee and using ntl
antivirus, promising that it would solve the problem. I ran "autoruns" as
you suggested, this lists the file with the same error message, any further
suggestions very welcome
 
Autoruns is new program for me. It does offer the facility to delete
an entry which is needed to remove the error.

To be on the safe side create a System Restore point before deleting.
