Missing Favorites

I rebooted my computer this morning and some of my favorites are no missing. The majority of them are still there, but for some reason the folders which I created since June 4th are missing while the individual favorites that were created since then but weren't put into folders are still there. Any assistance as to why this happened, where they may have went, and how I may recover them would be greatly appreciated.

Windows XP SP2
IE Version 6.0.2900.2180, Build 62900.2180
All updated to the last fix.

Using My Computer go to C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Favorites and
see if they are still there (and just not showing up in IE). If so, then in
IE use the File...Export/Import tool and export all your Favorites to a
file. Then log in with another username with Admin. privilidges and delete
the Favorites folder in your profile. Reboot, and that Favorites folder
will be recreated as empty. Then use the Import/Export tool to reload your
Favorites back in.

If they are not in the folder I mentioned above, do a Start...Search and see
if one or more have been "moved" elsewhere on your system. If still no joy,
then those Favorites may be gone for good, and it's been a lesson to back up
your Favorites often.

I'll try to explain it a little better. The other night when I shut down my computers and went to bed, all of my favorites were there. The next morning when I started my computer, some of my favorites were missing. I have no idea why or where they went. This happened to me a couple of months ago too. I did not try to delete any of my favorites. I have tried restoring the computer to a previous restore point, but that didn't help any. Any assistance you may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you try to delete some favorites manually ?
This cannot happen via any software installed your system.

Please post more details.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have tried both, but to no avail. I may have to just suck it up and remember to back them up next time.

Jon,

Was the idea of this to avoid any possible effect from option:
Enable Personalized Favorites Menu

Notice that Favorites has a Desktop.ini in it.
Would he still get a sufficiently clear view of the state of his Favorites
even via Explorer?

I say, go to the source! <eg> Open a cmd window and enter:

cd /d %USERPROFILE%\Favorites
dir/a

to find out what is really there.

No, it didn't have anything to do with the Personalized Favorites Menu
option. It's just that I've seen instances where IE seems to get
disassociated with the Favorites menu, and not display Favorites that are
visible through My Computer or Windows Explorer. However, your method
really gets into the roots! :-)
