Suddenly, my computer no longer recognizes the cd or dvd drive. Both
have completely disappeared. The do not show up in My Computer; they
do not show up in the BIOS screen; they do not show up in Device
Manager.

The computer is a Compaq Presario; the cd drive is a Compaq and the
dvd drive is a Philips. I've been to the HP web site and followed all
their suggestions except opening the case and checking connections.

Going through "Add New Hardware" changed nothing.

I uninstalled the recent automatic updates from Microsoft and am now
without further options. Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to
get these drives back? Thanks.

If they don't show up in the BIOS then either the drive is broken or else
it's a cabling issue. Open your computer and check the cable.

Are the CD/DVD (how many 2 or 1), on a separate controller card installed on
your system?

You said BIOS does not see them. Did you reboot and go into CMOS settings
and check that to deteermine that BIOS can't see them .. or are your
speculating.

If you have checked your CMOS settinsg after rebooting, and you Drives are
on a separate controller card ... check to see if that controller card is
enabled under CMOS.
