missing driver??

Hello,

I'm at my wits end... I recently purchased a Digital Max DVD drive from
Office Max.
I had no problems taking out my old, defective CD-Rom drive. I left in the
CD burner
drive.

According to the manual for the new drive, I don't need to install any
drivers because Windows 2000 has a generic one that will automatically load.

However, it doesn't find the driver and now neither of my drives are working.

I found this on the Microsoft website:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...82-4b50-44c8-a634-3227c0e71293&DisplayLang=en

Apparently, if you download the SP4 "some driver installation programs" no
longer
work. I guess that's what has happened to me. I'm not sure that I've
downloaded SP4 but I don't know what else it could be.

So I downloaded the patch (above link), however, it's "recommended" that I
backup
my computer before I install it. This is extremely difficult to do, as my cd
burner
drive "isn't found" and it would take a TON of 1.44 floppies. I'm currently
using
19.6GB of 40GB.

Is there anything I can do to fix this mess I've gotten myself into? I even
tried
taking out the new drive and putting in the old one (it's not completely
defective,
but annoying, hence the replacing...) but of course, no driver, so it's not
working either.

Also, the drives aren't showing up in my device manager.

I'm having a mild panic attack over here. I can't believe this is happening.

Please help.

Thanks in advance,
Carrie

Humm, you replaced the CD with a DVD and it doesn't work, and you ask
"how" when I suggest you install a "second HD"? I think it's probably
time to visit the shop, and have them take care of it.

actually, it was as simple as deleting the filters in the registry. and
setting the secondary drives in the BIOS to auto.

i feel as though your 2nd reply is a little condescending. please keep in
mind that there are different levels of expertise around here. some people
can follow directions and install a new drive but might not understand other
things that are second nature to you.

if anyone else has this problem, i suggest talking to your computer
manufacturer - in my case, dell. the online technical support chat was able
to help me.

Sorry if you feel that way. If that is the only copy of data, and you
ask how to install a second HD to save copies of important files. I only
suggested that method so as not to have you turn into a VERY unhappy
person. I am glad they were able to talk you through it and you are back
in business.

You were rather abrupt. I suggest flowers or candy.
