Missing distribution list

A long, important distribution list has disappeared from my Outlook
contacts. At the same time, the contacts no longer display in alphabetical
order. One name, beginning with the letter 'T' insists on being displayed
first. Is there any hope for recovery. This is standalone O2003, no exchange
server.

Perhaps the list is being sorted by a different field and filtered so the DL
doesn't show?
