Hi

I've recently performed a fresh install of XP over an
existing copy. The install was successful with the
exception that I seem to be missing about 6GB of disk
space on the relevent partition.

I've tried searching for what might be causing this but
to no avail.

Is it likely to be some temp files left over from the
install? Does anyone know where they might be?

Thanks
Simon

Hi Simon

From a (c:) command prompt type the following to see what free space is left
on your hard disk:

dir /a/s

Does it still show up as missing 6GBs?

You can take the help of diskmanagement which you will fin in control panel--administrative tools--computer mangement computer management and if you can see unallocated 6 gb.It means that you have not made the partations properly you have to make them again

I Just installed XP SP2 and ended up with 2 gigabytes missing in my
root (C:\) drive! This is the NTFS file system.

Anyway using MyComputer or command line Dir/a/s reports that I have
1.71 Gigabytes free of a total of 7.81 gigabytes total on the C:\
drive.

I only feel slightly better that the Disk Management utility thinks I
have 3.71 Gigabytes free out of 7.81 Gigabytes total.

Looking all the files and directories on C:\ with the windows explorer
I get 3.71 free.

Has SP2 seriously munched my file NTFS system?
Got a Fix?

Hi

Stop and start System Restore to regain some space (but you
will lose your current Restore points).

Also, you should clean out this folder now and then (WU5's
temporary download folder):

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

If you are sure you don't need to uninstall SP2, you can delete
the %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\ folder.

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

Alternatively (for the $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder):

If you make a backup of the folder to e.g. a CD, you can put it
back if you need to uninstall SP2. After restoring the backup,
run %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
to start the process.

If you see %windir%\$NTUninstall* folders which dates back to your
SP1 installation, you can delete those. They are not removed by the
SP2 installation in case you want/need to go back to SP1 (and then
be able to uninstall the hotfixes in case you need to).

The following folders should be safe to delete:

%windir%\$xpsp1hfm$\
%windir%\$NtUninstallQ<some#>$\
%windir%\$NtUninstallKB<some#>$\

This question relates to your response. I upgraded to XP Pro from Me and
then installed SP2, and again lost an enormous amount of disk space. I
notice an Undo folder under the root diredtory that contains a zip Backup.cab
and backup.$$$ files. Is this folder safe to delete? I do not intend to
ever uninstall SP2 or revert to Me.

Hi

You can delete the Undo folder as long as you have no plans to
revert back to WinME (who would ;-)

Just to make sure, is there any way that this backup.cab in the undo folder
has anything to do other than with Me restore? In Control Panel under Add or
Remove Programs there is a Windows XP Uninstall feature. Are these linked?

If I remove the undo folder then what do I do with the Windows XP Uninstall?

Also, do you mean to delete the entire folder and sub-folders for
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ ?

Aaron

PS Your suggestion on turning system restore on nd off gave me an
additional 1.25 GB of disk space. Great!!

Yes.

XP Uninstall?

Start regedit.exe and go to the registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

You should find a *sub*-key under that one that is this Windows XP
Uninstall entry. Delete this sub-key.

Also, do you mean to delete the entire folder and sub-folders for
%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ ?

I would have kept the Download download folder and just deleted all
files and folders in it (but if you delete the Download folder, WU
will create it again next time it downloads an update).

Yes, the SP2 installation creates a *big* restore point.
