On occasion when starting windows xp pro sp2 I get
"windows\system32\config\system" or "system32\pci.sys" missing or
corrupted... Usually I have to boot from cd and copy the files and then
reboot. Tonight I hit the reset button and it booted normally. This has
happened 3 or 4 times now. I have scanned with AVG and Trend Micro and found
nothing. Any ideas are appreciated.

Well Bruce, I do appreciate the help but I think that's a little beyond my
computer skills. Any ideas of why this would happen intermitantly? And what I
can do to stop it? I can get the files copied back ok and it will reboot
fine, but that's the extent of my messing with things. Thanks for the help.

The second link will assist your troubleshooting. The most common
causes of the problem, that I've seen, are either turning off the PC
without shutting it down properly (or a power outage), or defective or
overheated RAM.
