missing contact list

Recently my hard drive died but I paid to have a system recovery expert
recover it and put in on an external hard drive. In the meantime, I got a
new hard drive, reloaded all my software (outlook included) and started
re-building my contact list. Now that I ahve access to my old contact list,
I'd like to combine the two. But, I have no idea where the old one is stored
or what it is called or even what format it uses. I did not change any
defaults on either outlook. Where does it put contacts by default? What is
the name of the file? Thanks in advance!

My search didn't find any *.pab files. Any other suggestions?

I'm not sure how I'll combine them yet. I was thinking, if I could open the
old one in outlook, I could export it to a csv file then import it to outlook
once I had my new book open.

You have received inaccurate advice for the previous poster. No version of
Outlook has ever stored Contact information in PAB files.
All Outlook data is in one file. The file you need to is your Personal
Folders file (*.pst) It's where all the mail, calendar, contacts etc are
stored.

Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm
http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm

When you find it, do not import or export. Simply open it in Outlook and
copy the data you need from it into your current PST file.

Russ,
Thanks - I found the files (archieve.pst and outlook.pst) and tried to open
them with my current outlook. I just did file / open / browse and selected
each of them. However, when I did this, my outlook data was not the old data
but my existing data. Am I missing a step?

It sounds like the only step you are missing is the path to the correct PST
file.

:

try doing a search for *.pab
I'm curious how you will combine the two files.
