I'm trying to make sure the ICW is disabled. When I
follow the posted instructions,

"Disable Internet Connection Firewall
In Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet
Connections, and then click Network Connections.
Right-click the connection on which you would like to
disable ICF, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click the box to clear the option to
Protect my computer or network."

my Network Connections do NOT have an Advanced Tab on my
computer. Now, my wife's computer (networked) does have
that tab. Why doesn't my computer have it?

Hello
If you have configured a wireless or other home network, it is possible that
you set up an Ethernet bridge to communicate with this network. You will
need to disconnect this bridge before you can enable the built in firewall
in Windows XP. To do this:

1.. From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
2.. Click the Network and Internet Connections link.
3.. Click the Network Connections link.
4.. Right-click your local area connection.
5.. Select Disconnect from Ethernet Bridge.
6.. Close all windows.

Yeah, you're right, I do have an Ethernet Bridge. I'll do what you suggested. One question though, why does XP set up an Ethernet Bride? Do I need it? I have two computers network together through a router and share a cable internet connection.

Anyway, thanks for your help on my first issue. You told me exactly what I need to know

Hello Doug
No it is not necessary to have a bridge to connect a home network, you can
do some research to see if it is right for you.

In order to ping the computers on your network you will need to disable the
firewall, the router will supply the firewall.
However I have installed the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Protocol which allows me
to connect to other computers on my network with the firewalls enabled.
