mircosoft word backspace

When using word I have somehow turned on a function so that if I select text
within a document, by pushing the backspace key the text is not deleted. How
do I change this back? similarly when the text is higlighted and i begin
typing the text is not deleted. It is something small but it frustrates me
emensely
 
In Word's options check 'Typing Replaces Selection' - First item in Edit
section in Word up to 2003. First item in Advanced setion in Word 2007.
