Hi all:

I am looking for a laptop and I want to run XP Pro on it. What is the
minimum's on the CPU speed, memory, harddrive, etc. that XP can run on, or
will it operate satisfactorily on a Celeron CPU @ 700MHz, etc.?

Thanks for any info., Doug Eilertson

Hi Doug,

Windows XP Home Edition System Requirements:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx

Windows XP Professional System Requirements:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx

I'd suggest atleast 256MB RAM. Mine has 768MB running XP Professional.

The published minimums for Windows XP by Microsoft are much too low,
in my opinion, and you will not get satisfactory performance from a
machine that is at or close to these minimums.

RAM, at least up to 512 mb, appears to be more important than CPU
speed for most instances. Here are my own opinions of what you
should have in order to get reasonable performance from Windows XP and
current application programs:

CPU speed less than 800 mhz = 512 mb RAM minimum
CPU speed 800 mhz to 1500 mhz = 384 mb RAM minimum
CPU speed more than 1.5 ghz = 256 mb RAM minimum

You should have at least 2 gb of unused space on the hard drive before
installing Windows XP and 5 gb would be a more comfortable figure,
given they way that current applications and files eat up disk space.

Good luck
