Minimized programs in task bar not seen

Shut down system yesterday with no new s/w or changes
installed. Today minimized programs are not shown at all
in the task bar. Had this problem before and had to
create a new user account and transfer all account
details over - quite tedious. Must be a way to correct
this - any help appreciated indeed.
