Minimized Outlook task bar icon appears different after new msg

It would be very helpful if Outlook's task bar icon appears in a different
color/shape when minimized after receiving new messages and before these
messages being viewd/read.

Not a bad idea, but there are numerous options already available to you for
new mail arrival. These include sounds, desktop alerts, and an envelope
taskbar icon. The options are available here:

Tools>Options>E-mail Options>Advanced E-mail Options>When New Items Arrive
