Hi,

I would like to be able to use the floppy drive on our XP PC, when I look in
explorer it is not listed.

What can I do to access it and check that it is working ok.

Cheers Steve.

Does it work in dos?

Thank you,

I have looked in the "bios" and it reads:-

first boot device (hdd-0)
second boot device (disabled)
third boot device (disabled)
boot other device (enabled)
swap floppy drive (disabled)
boot up floppy seek (disabled)

I have a cd drive installed which it working ok.
**Which of the above should I work on, to see if the floppy drive is ok?**

I've also looked in the "cmos" :-

ide primary master (combo52x16c)
ide primary slave (none)
ide secondary master (hds722540vlat20)
ide secondary slave (none)

drive "A" (none)
drive"B" (none)

Cheers Steve

The above two lines indicate that your floppy drive is not seen in the
BIOS. Therefore, Windows cannot see a device that as far as it (and
your computer) knows does not exist.

With the computer off and unplugged, open the case. Make sure the ribbon
cable and power connector going to the floppy drive are snug. Reseat
them to be sure. Start your computer and go into the BIOS again. See if
the floppy drive is now recognized. If it is not, swap out the drive
for a known-working floppy drive. See if the drive is recognized in the
BIOS. If the new drive is not, then the floppy drive connector on the
motherboard has failed.

The BIOS should not autosense the floppy drive. You will have to enable
it manually by setting the "drive "A" (none)" to 1.44MB type.

It depends on the motherboard. I've never gone in and set the floppy
drive manually on any of mine.
