Migration from ME to XP Home

Folks,

Yesterday I finally made the switch from ME to XP (I wanted to use ITunes).

XP loaded itself over the existing c:windows directory, wiping out "all"
traces of ME. But it left all my other files (programs and my documents,
etc) untouched.

Even though my program files are still there, I can't start any of them.
When I manually enter a program folder and click on the application, XP tells
me the "Windows Registry" isn't right.

What can I do to not have to reinstall all my program files again?

Oh, I can a cloned D: drive that still contains the entire contents of my ME
drive, but prior to XP upgrading.

Thanks!

Have you tried reinstalling all of your programs from their original
installation media?..

Before you upgraded, did you run the compatibility checker to make sure you
weren't going to run into problems?

Although upgrades in place to XP are usually pretty painless, it's often
best to do a clean install of XP (even if you have only an upgrade version,
you can usually insert the 'qualifying media' when prompted.

That said, a) what's the exact error message b) what do you see in your
event logs and c) do you have your installation media for the software
you're having problems with?

Too late now. There are several ways to install XP, and the path you chose
wiped the old directory but left the rest of the files intact. There's no
way for XP to know what to do with those files. Depending on the XP disk you
used, you should have been offered an option to upgrade the existing OS
instead of replacing it. If you have an OEM XP disk, it won't do an upgrade,
which may be why it installed the way it did.

Also, some programs don't survive the OS upgrade well and need to be
reinstalled anyway. If that's the case, you should just reinstall those few
programs.

You could wipe the C drive, clone back to C again, and start over, if you
have a disk that will do an upgrade. Otherwise, you'll just have to
reinstall all of your programs.

Reinstall them.

Thanks, Mike. I was hoping to avoid that.

See, some of the software I use (Garmin Mapsource GPS) I've upgraded a few
times. So I can't just reinstall the latest upgrade of it; I've got to
start with the older version, install it, then install successive upgrades.

A real PITA.

But I, of course, have all the original source disks for all the software I
have.

No, I didn't run the compability checker. I didn't know that existed.

I had heard that doing a clean install was better that performing an XP
upgrade, so that's why I chose that path.

I guess I'll just reinstall the software. :cry Here goes Sunday night.
Let's see, Harry Potter, or Microsoft Outlook? Hmmmm.

Thanks for all the help, folks!!

I agree that re-installation can be a pain, but it will be a good time to
decide to install only what you do you use, and not what you have had
installed previously 'just in case'.. :-)

When you inserted your XP upgrade CD, it should've been one of the autorun
menu options....

Doesn't sound like you did, if you still see shards of your previous
installation. A clean install wipes everything out.

At this point, I might suggest you back up your data and start over with a
*real* clean install.
