A question was asked to me if there was a way to migrate the windows mail
client in Vista to Outlook. My friend wants to use the features in outlook
but doesn't want to lose the contact list or emails currently in window mail
the version of outlook in question is 2003 but he is willing to upgrade if
needed

any help would be appreciated

With Outlook installed on the Vista computer,
In Windows Mail, export to Microsoft Exchange format, it creates an
Outlook.pst file
located in
C:\Users\"username"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook\

open this .pst file with Outlook.

Fairly straightforward:

1. Install Outlook 2003 on the Vista machine and setup it's accounts. Both
Outlook and Windows Mail must be setup and functional for the transfer to
work.
2. Use 'File|Export|Messages' in Windows Mail to transfer all email.
3. Use 'File|Import and Export|Import Internet Mail and Addresses' in
Outlook 2003 to move all the addresses (be sure to UNcheck the "Import Mail"
checkbox on this screen).

We use Windows Mail to move the messages and Outlook to move the addresses
because WM does a better job with messages than Outlook does, while Outlook
is better at moving addresses than WM is.
