MID formula question

I am trying to set up a MID formula. I entered "=MID(H2,D2,1)". I don't
want the H2 to be the cell, but rather I want the value that I entered into
H2 to be the cell. In other words, in cell H2 I entered M12, and I want the
formula to refer to M12 rather than H2. Any ideas on how to make the value
of the cell (M12) be what the formula looks for rather than the cell H2?
