where do I sign up for Microsoft's automatic update notification service for
windows XP?

Try the following:

Click the Start button, then Control Panel. In Control Panel, select
System. You should see a window open with 7 tabs, one of which is labeled
"Automatic Updates". You can select your options there.

Sign up right there on your computer. ;<)

Press <Win>+<Break> (that is, hold down the Windows logo key, between the
<Alt> and <Ctrl> keys, while you press the Pause/Break key in the upper
right of your keyboard).

The System Properties screen should pop up in front of you. Click the
Automatic Updates tab and make your choices. I like to check the top box
and the middle box under Settings. You might prefer the top box and bottom
box, which automatically installs the downloaded updates.

Click the link in the middle of that page for more information.

start, help ... look at the first item under 'pick a task'. If you
haven't already explored 'start, help' I recommend you do so - it'll
teach you all about such useful things as system restore, and
troubleshooting. Besides, some of the $200-$400 you paid for XP went on
providing you with a neat help system, you migth as well extract your
money's worth.
