I have Windows 98 2nd Edition installed on my computer and
want to upgrade to Windows XP Professional. I have run the
compatibility check included on the upgrade disc, and
printed out the report that was generated. It stated that
I have several different types of incompatibility with
hardware and software, and referred me to a compatibility
list on line. I couldn't find said list, and attempted to
contact Microsoft for support. I was told at the support
site that I needed a product ID for my XP software, and
that it had to be installed to obtain it. I have the
product key, but that doesn't seem to work. How should I
(a) check for compatibility of the items listed in the
report, and (b) find the product ID for my software so I
can contact Microsoft Support for help?

Hi,

b) You don't get a ProductID until after you've installed it. I know, kind
of a catch-22 there.

a) Right-click this link and use "save target as" to get the compatibility
list:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/whql/hcl/winxphclx86.txt

For any hardware/software not supported, just make sure drivers, upgrdes, or
patches are available from the manufacturer.
