A friend mentioned that he had received a copy of a Works database
(filename.wdb) that is basically a contact list and budget for a club. He
doesn't own Works, and does not know how to open the file. I tried to
retrieve it via Access and was not successful. Anyone know if there is a
way to read this file with Access?

Thanks.

Access cannot read a Works file.

You will need to find someone who has Works, and export the data in some
format that Access can read, e.g. dBase.

This spurred me into uploading (after long hesitation) a sample mdb that
uses the Word mailmerge object model to extract data from a .wdb file
into an Access table.

It works on the few .wdb files I've obtained to try it on, but hasn't
been seriously tested. So it may be better than nothing. The link is

just import it into excel.....

From there you can go anywhere.....

Albert, what am I missing? On my Excel 2003 installation the Data|Import
External Data|Import Data menu command doesn't offer Microsoft Works as
an option. All I can find is an option in File|Open to open a Works 2.0
..wks file (i.e. pre-Windows 95).

Good and bad!!!

Gee, I kind of thought Excel could read those!!!

I did NOT realize that only such a older version!!! -

So, my suggestion to use Excel is of limited use. (that means my advice is
not useful at all!!).

Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. (it kind of seemed too easy...since no
one else suggested Excel!!).

The solution is to have the other user save it into something else.
Apparently, works can save as Excel.....
