Maybe you are up to date?
Maybe you installed a beta release of a service pack, never uninstalled it
and replaced it with the full version?

You did not give enough information.

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
winver
--> click OK.

Come back and type - verbatim - what the picture at the top of the window
that opens up says. Also - type verbatim what the line starting with
"version" says. With those two bits of information - we'lll at least know
something about your machine.

this is what I see

No high-priority updates for your computer are available. To check for
optional updates, return to our home page and click Custom.

Did that as well and it shows

No high-priority updates for your computer are available. To select
other updates, use the options to the left.

Either the folks at Microsoft are sleeping or forgot to put them
out ....

Today is the second Tuesday. That doesn't mean updates, if any, are released
at one minute after midnight. I'm in the Redmond time zone and often don't
see them until late Tuesday or Wednesday AM.

Let's try this again.

Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name and edition) while the line starting with the
word "version" will give you the rest of the story.

Post _both_ in response to this message verbatim.

No paraphrasing - instead - ensure character-for-character copying.

Snooker 416,

Do you have the Automatic Update or BITS services running?
START | RUN | Type 'services.msc' (no quotes) & press ENTER
Look for:

AUTOMATIC UPDATES and BACKGROUND INTELLINGENT TRANSFER SERVICE

If they aren't started, right-click | start & make sure they're on automatic
too

Also this was the last update I got from Microsoft update site

Windows XP Update for Windows XP (KB971513) Sunday, November 29,
2009 Microsoft Update

So you got updates on November 29 and you are expecting more now?

Yes - it is the second Tuesday of a given month - I'll give you that.
However, that 'guide' is just that. It doesn't mean "*Your* 12:01AM on the
second Tuesday of each month"... Microsoft will likely release updates
today - sometime during their work-day likely.

My advice - if you are thinking of the 'second tuesday' guide for Microsoft
updates - is to wait until the wednesday after the second tuesday of each
month to check for updates and if still in doubt - you can always see what
updates were released for a given month...

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work - although they may have an
"Advance Notification for" in place when the actual time approaches.

Example:

November 2009
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms09-nov.mspx

December 2009
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms09-dec.mspx
(As of 10AM Central Time - "Advance Notification for" - not "Summary")

It sounds like it is working fine.

If you go to the Update page and choose Express and there are no High
Priority updates you will get your first message.

It suggests you to return to the previous page and choose Custom where
there still may not be any High Priority updates and you will get your
second message.

You can choose other non High Priority updates from the selections on
the left.

What do you see there?

If you get lost, start over and this time choose Custom instead of
Express.

It may take a while for it to figure things out and display:

Checking for the latest updates for you computer...

When it finishes, you should see clickable options on the left.

Do you not see any clickable options on the left, such as:

Windows XP

Shenan would like more information about your system which you can
provide without any verbatim typing or possibility of typing mistakes
and also a lot more infromation:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste
the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to
be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted
information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.
