Dear Friends,
I seem to have lost the ability to utilise both Microsoft and Windows Update.
I can open both these pages; verfiying in both cases is fine...
On clicking on Express OR Custom, the cursor radiates back and forth
indefinately...
I have left it running for 60 minutes and nothing happens....
just back and forth back and forth...
In passing, Office Update works perfectly..
Any assistance gratefully accepted.

Make sure the following services are set to automatic start
1. Automatic updates
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service
3. Event Log service
To do this click Start > Run... then type services.msc into the box, and
click OK.

Hi,

Did you wait patiently till the animation bar stop. Mostly there will be
around 50 updates pending for download after a long scanning.

Did you get any error message that finally showed that Windows update cannot
continue. Please post the error number.

Are you using a direct internet connection or ever configured the internet
explorer to use custom settings. Please let me know this and this is very
important on how windows update works.

sorry Andrew,
IE 6 with current updates till about 1 week ago

Tangential to aussiebaron's original query. In my computer (Win-XPPro,
SP2, updated to the day) both Microsoft and Windows Update take me to
the same site. In fact, I was going to ask whether I can remove one of
the links from the Start menu. Are they really different?

Hi,

I've got the same problem and searched already a long time on the internet
to find a solution. I hope you could find one.
I'm on a business network behind a proxy server. I've got administrator
privelage on my computer and with anyone else on the work the updates work
fine.

Please help
