I just started to receive a message from C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SFPSVR.EXE that states: "Welcome to Microsoft Telnet Client..
Escape character is [CNTL+]
Microsoft Telnet>"

This appears for any user who logs on. It started this afternoon. I am current with all XP critical updates and I run Norton Internet Security 2004 and AdAware and Spybot.

I can either Close the window or type Quit and press ENTER and the window goes away.

Why am I getting this message?? Is it a virus or trojan?

I don't see Telnet in the Services or Startup tabs when I go into MSCONFIG.

Please advise. Thanks!!!!!!

The client program is telnet.exe, not SFPSVR.exe. I run Windows XP Pro
SP-1 fully updated and there is no SFPSVR.exe on my system.

If you suspect it is a virus or trojan, why haven't you ran a full scan
using a recently updated anti-virus program?

Have you yet ran Ad-Aware, Spybot, and CWShredder to check for spyware?
You could run the online PestPatrol and SpySweeper scans but beware that
they are notorious for false positives (to get you to buy their
products) so you'll have to wade through their instructions for manual
removal to see if anything of what they report is actually in your
system.

Have you identified all currently running processes so you know what
started them?

Have you checked your [login] startup scripts (msconfig doesn't show
those)?

Have you checked your Task Scheduler for events scheduled to run on
login or startup (msconfig doesn't list those, either)?

Thanks for the help. I checked for Norton Internet Security updates and I was current. I ran Spybot and AdAware and they came back clean.

1) How do I check my logon scripts??
2) How do I check for Scheduled Tasks? I doin't recall ever scheduling any tasks or maintenance.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
