I've got an email from Microsoft on 25th Sep. It's
attached with a Microsoft patch and it's subject is
Latest Update. And although i've installed Norton Anit-
Virus, it didnt warn me of a virus. So I open that
attached file and installed that patch. Now, whenever I
connect the internect, my connection is only fine for
about five minutes and becomes slow after it. And I can't
open the Norton sysworks too. Whenever I open it, it
says "memory violation". Morever, I can't even restore my
computer. I think my problem is concerned with this
attached email so please let me know if there is a way to
solve it.

Greetings --

What you received is either a very common malicious hoax or the
output of a computer infected by one of several wide-spread, mass
emailing worms. The most widely-known are:

W32.Swen.A_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Dumaru_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Gibe_mm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

Microsoft never has, does not currently, and never will email
unsolicited security patches. At the most, if, and only if, you
subscribe to their security notification newsletter, they will send
you an email informing you that a new patch is available for
downloading.

Any and all legitimate patches and updates are readily available
at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. (Notice that this is the true
URL, rather than the bogus one that may have been contained in the
email you received.) Any messages that point to any other source(s) or
claim to have the patch attached are bogus.

You're receiving these emails because your email address is in
the address book of someone infected with a worm, and/or because you
posted your real email address somewhere on-line, either in a forum
accessible to the public and spambots, such as Usenet, or on an
untrustworthy web site that subsequently sold your address as part of
a mailing list. One thing you can do is notify _everyone_ with whom
you've ever corresponded via email that one or more of them may be
infected with a mass emailing worm, and should take the appropriate
steps.

There's probably no way of blocking all of the bogus messages, but
you can greatly reduce the number you get by creating a rule, based
upon the most commonly used subject lines, to delete the emails from
the server without ever downloading them.

1. You didn't receive an e-mail from Microsoft but from someone who's
spoofing Microsoft and making the e-mails look like they came from MS.

2. The attachment contained a worm called Swen - not a Windows Update.
Visit Symantec's web site for removal instructions - it's difficult to
remove.

3. Either your Norton AntiVirus definitions are not up to date or you have
disabled Real Time file protection and that's why Norton didn't pick it up.

Hi there...
Yes, there is help, set your home page for
www.symantec.com, connect to the internet and go to
downloads in the site. Then look for virus removal tool
and download and save to your desktop, the virus removal
tool for SWEN. Run the tool after disconnecting your
connection. Afterwards, go immediatly to windows update
and down load the patch. Keep your anti virus up to date
and run a fire wall!

This is why you should never open un-solicitated e-amil attachments.
Anti-Virs scanners aren't perfect even if you keep them up to date.

Computer companies such as Microsoft never snd patches via e-mail. They
will provide a link to thier websites where you can download any patches.
