Hi,
I have recently purchased a second hand pc running on Windows xp under
system info there is no sp1 or sp2 next to windows xp.
So the question is I am looking to purchase Microsoft office for my son,but
I see microsoft office 2000,2003,2005,2007,.
Can you please let me know what version I need so I know what I have to
purchase.
Many thanks.

First, you need to quickly download and install Windows XP SP2 to protect
your computer.

Office 2003 is the latest Office version for Windows. Office 2007 is still
in Beta.

The version of office you purchase has nothing to do with the Windows SP
that's installed. First thing would be to install Windows SP2. Then decide
how much you want to spend on your Office application, 2003 is the current
offering, there is no 2005, and 2007 is still in beta and not available for
purchase.

All of them will run on the XP computer, but office 2003 is very stable
and has several updates for it. I don't know what office 2005 is and
2007 is still beta of I remember correctly.

If your Son is in school, you should be able to purchase an EDU version
of MS Office at a much reduced cost.

The current version is Office 2003 but the new version, Office 2007,
will come out early next year. MS is giving away trial versions of
Office 2003 for 60 days. You might want to get the trial version now
and sometimes in December 2006, you will get the option to buy the full
version of Office 2003 with free upgrade to Office 2007!. It has always
been the case with MS products to give free upgrade to people who have
just bought old versions within 30 days of the new versions coming out.

First, the answer to the question has nothing to do with what version of
Windows XP you are running.

You have a choice of the following versions, all of which will work under
Windows XP: Microsoft Office 95, 97, 2000, 2002 (aka Office XP), and 2003.
Office 2007 doesn't exist yet; it's currently being beta tested and is
expected soon.

Which version you "need" is a harder question to answer. In general, the
more recent versions have more functionality, but cost more. Used copies of
older versions can usually be bought very inexpensively at places like eBay.

And Microsoft Office comes in several editions, with additional programs in
the bigger editions (at higher cost).

To add to the confusion, there are other choices of Office Suites besides
Microsoft's, and these are all cheaper. There's WordPerfect Office, the very
inexpensive StarOffice, and the freeware OpenOffice (and others that are
less common).

Which is best for your son depends on his needs, and to some extent on his
personal preferences, not to mention your budget. How old is he? Does he
need it for school? If so, the school may require a particular choice.

Tell us something about his intended uses, and I'm sure you can get lots of
recommendations here.
