Note: 24hoursupport.helpdesk removed. It's not on the Microsoft server.

Alex,
This is probably being caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite)

Work through the solutions (CWShredder, Ad-aware, Spybot) at
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm Also note the security tips on that
page.

Additional information at:
The Parasite Fight http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
Bugs, Glitches & Stuffups: http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm

If not caused by malware, consider disabling (for diagnostic purposes)
legitimate programs running in the background which might be interacting
with IE- security, antivirus, ad-blockers, toolbars & other add-ons, etc.
You may have to uninstall then reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.

Hope this helps,
Don

I tried to the following actions from http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
----------------
Windows 2000
----------------

Recommended Minimal Security Settings
Close all instances of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express
Control Panel | Internet Options | Click on the "Security" tab
Highlight the "Internet" icon, click "Custom Level"
* "Download signed ActiveX scripts" = Prompt // Was : Download signed ActiveX controls" = Prompt
* "Download unsigned ActiveX scripts = Disable // Was : "Download unsigned ActiveX controls = Disable
* "Initialize and script ActiveX not marked as safe" = Disable // Was: "Initialize and script ActiveX not marked as safe"=Disable
* "Installation of Desktop items" = Prompt // Item "Installation of Desktop items" not found on my computer
* "Launching programs and files in a IFRAME" = Prompt // Item "Launching programs and files in a IFRAME" not found on my computer

Click on the "Content" tab, Click the "Publishers" button
* Highlight and click "Remove" any unknowns, click Ok

// -------------------------
// Here is the Content" | "Publishers" content :
// C2 Media Ltd
// Macromedia Inc
// Niteline Media
// ------------------------
To remove them?

Why is this so important? [read this]

Click on the "Advanced" tab
* Uncheck: "Install on demand (other)", click Apply\Ok // Item "Install on demand (other)" not found
To test your setup after making the above changes [click here]
[snip]

Why is there the difference between
* items under "Recommended Minimal Security Settings" at http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
and
* items on my computer?

What should one do in this situation?

Alex,
I don't know why you're missing some of thse options. Someone else might
know. As for the Publishers list... if you didn't put those names in as
Trusted Publishers, then an adware/spyware program did.

Have you run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot?

I used Ad-aware.
It seems that it helped.

Thanks.
