Use Format | Cells ; open Custom; modify the format specs to:
$###0.00;($###0.00)

Click Format from the file menu

From the Format Cells dialogue box:
Select the Number Tab
Category = Currency
Decimal Places = 2
Symbol = $
Negative Numbers = ($1,234.10)
