Hi,

Since Microsoft Defender currently is free I would like to ask here if
anyone would recommend installing it? Funny installing something from an
OS vendor created to block holes in their own main product, and ultimaely
having to pay for it...... I which I could run a business like that:
Create something crappy and the charge people to have it work in an
acceptable manner. :)

If you're that negative, maybe you'd better not install it. ;)

I installed the whole Windows One Live Suite which includes Defender,
firewall and AV program and I like it. $20.00 a year for 3 machines does not
sound like a big amount, imho. YMMV, of course.

I am not negative, but the whole concept reminds me of the amazing job MS
has done being able to sell a product which has major flaws and in many
instances is a risk to use.

If you purchased a new car where the door locks didn’t work and on the
dashboard it had a button saying “Car thiefs, push here for quick start
without a keyâ€, what would you do? Say: “Oh well, a car is a complex
machine†and live with it? I don’t think so. Would you go back to the
dealership and accept to pay for new locks and have the theft button
removed? I don’t think so either. But that is what MS is able to get away
with. I am impressed! :)

I will try it out as long someone can tell me it can be safely removed, or
even removed at all which is not the case with a lot of stuff MS puts on
your computer.

All in all I would like to see MS stop offering applications and services
which are not directly connected to the OS and instead support ISVs to a
larger extent instead of competing with them.

Hi,

It's freeware, I'm using it without problems and I haven't read of any
problems uninstalling it. Though it is Beta software and some people
are having problems running and updating it.

If you want more information about it read the following posts:

"To pirate another MVP's (Robear's) post see the below paste . . .
While this software is crafted to MS standards, the team is very
interested in the feedback/experiences of the community.
The best way to provide this so it does come to their attention
is to please follow the requested actions, as pasted below.

So it is up to you. ;-)

errr, not quite.

I disagree. Since Microsoft will undoubtedly eventually charge for
Defender, I see it clearly as a conflict of interest.

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett, Doc (who uses sock puppets)
or Roger Johansson, for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial
software, crippleware, demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware,
spyware, time-limited software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

when defender was released and several areas of protection were dropped
that big's program covered (Big being the original writers of
microsofts antispyware beta) I looked elswhere, have been trialing
Arovax for several weeks (freeware) and it does the job, as far as
realtime protection is concerned,it has no on demand scanner, still run
other on demand scanners A2, ad-aware etc and no problems so far, I
don't use IE and as such BHO's are not a problem to me,(but are to my
son who tends to forget and use IE and he like poking around at seedy
stuff) which is one area of protection Microsoft antispyware dropped,
and one problem that can be a real nuisance, Arovax is fairly simple as
far as interface goes, but the price is right (freeware) and it does
block all the unwanted problems antispyware beta did ... perhaps we
need a team with a few spare PC's who are willing to put the freeware
antispyware etc programs to the test, I have several here and would
enjoy collaborating with others on such a program, and would be willing
to host any web displaying outcomes

1. Create image of your HD.
2. Install new program(s).
3. Don't like it?
4. Re-image your HD.

Works much better than "removing" programs, which rarely is complete as
you probably know already.

Zaphod;

This is tempting but looks pretty daunting. What do you mean when you
say "antispyware etc programs?" Is it as in "antispyware, antimalware,
etc?"
