Simon

I have the strangest problem. My PC will not go to
Microsoft.com At first I thought I had a virus even
though I have up todate Antivirus software and a
firewall. I formatted the hard drive and reinastalled
all mt software. This worked for a short while. I have
all the windows updates but it has again stopped
accessing Microsoft.com. I have tried disabling my
firewall to no avail. I even installed another browser
and this was able access Microsoft.com. Its not our
ISP's fault as we have other computers on our connection
that can happily connect. My antivirus finds no fault
nor does spybot. When I type www.microsoft.com in the
url, after a few minutes I get a Google search page which
says "Sorry, no information available for the URL
www.microsoft.com"

Please help, my hair is even more Grey that usual.

On Wed, 12 May 2004 22:34:35 -0700, Simon scratched out the following:

let me get this straight -
you open IE6 or whatever and type www.microsoft.com in the address area
and you get google?
Are you sure you aren't starting with google?

If not, your computer has been hijacked. You should visit the virus NG
and give them the information.

Yes when I type in the URL I get that message. However, I
have just tried it again and now it says

Gateway Timeout
The following errorocurred:
Server unreachable
Please contact the administrator.

Its really odd. All other websites that I try work just
fine, its just microsoft.com and all its pages. I do have
Google toolbar and if I do type "www.microsoft.com" as a
search I get the 1st message.

What was this Virus NG?

I have seen that some viruses can block access to
microsoft.com and I have even tried running a file
called "DoomCln-KB836525-v-ENU.exe"

This didn't find anything wrong.

Was your homepage set to Microsoft?
I am having the same problem... I can access any site on the internet except my homepage!
I have tried to acces thru msn...aol and others but keep getting "this page is unavailable"
Two other computers on home network have full access
Really weird!!! The worst part is that my homepage is a working environment for me... 100% of my income
H E L P ! ! !

No I have msn.com as my Homepage. If you're getting an
error everytime you start IE then temporarily change your
homepage from microsoft.com

It is really weird, I have run lots of virus scans and
nothing is found.

It seems like something is blocking the access, so first
I thought its the firewall. I disabled it and I still
get the error. Its strange that I can access it using a
different brower, so Im guesing the probem is with IE
somewhere. I've checked and there is nothing
in "restricted zones"

I'm at a loss :(

I hear you about at a loss.... I can change my homepage without any problems.... but when I try to access the original, no matter from anysite, I get the same message "this page is unavailable" but only on this computer... the others go straight to it without any trouble at all....

So are a lot of others.

Yours may be this problem. Often after removal of spywares.

It may be a HOSTS file problem.
Look for a file named HOSTS (no extension, could be hidden) rename it
OLDHOSTS.

If you did not create the file, then you may have parasites, or you are
using a web accelerator program that would be causing this problem.

See if the experts can find a new variant of some parasite.

the problem. FANTASTIC.. :) but I'd like to find out

No, we have other computers at home and I used one of
those to search the knowledgebase. Then I accessed it
through our home network.
