Microsoft changed my computer setup.

I was asked to reregister my copy of XP because Microsoft detected some new
hardware. (Hardware had been there for years and working properly.) After I
reregistered, my computer could no longer find my CD ROM, and my CD burner
door will not open. It seems to be running continuously.

How can I get Microsoft to return my old registration so my CD readers will
work again?

Hi Tex:

You may have been asked to /reactivate/ your copy of Windows.
Registration isn't required and most people don't bother.

Reactivation is needed when you make substantial changes to the hardware
in your computer -- Microsoft is checking that you aren't trying to
install your copy of Windows on a second computer.

If you have a legitimate copy of Windows and did not install any new
hardware in your computer you may be assured that your computer is
infected with malware.

So what do I do now to get my equipment to work like it used to before I was
asked to reactivate Windows?

The fact that your CD tray does not open has nothing to do with product
activation. In fact, it has nothing to do with software. That's a
mechanical problem.

To get the tray to open, unfold a paper clip and stick one of the ends
into the little hole on the front of the tray. That's the 'eject'
button. If you find yourself having to do this frequently, it's time to
replace your CD drive.

Since you were asked to reactivate Windows without having added any
hardware, you should consider scanning your computer for the presence of
malware.

No, it says that my software is not compatible and do I want to buy some new
software. Just seems curious that everything was working perfectly before I
allowed Microsoft to reactivate Windows and didn't work afterwards.

its called phishing..........a fake MS website that asks you to activate
because you have changed something then endeavors to sell you a product that
you dont need..........there is a sucker born every minute.
What software would not be compatible???
Really do suggest you run anti virus...anti adware....anti
spyware........anti malware.

Microsoft did not make any changes to your computer.

If your computer detected some hardware changes (and you did not
actually change any of the hardware) then the most likely causes are:

1. An update to the computer's BIOS (which you would almost certainly
have gotten from the computer manufacturer and installed yourself) may
change how the computer works with and detects the hardware components
that are installed.

2. A change in the electronic charatecteristics of some motherboard
components could have the same effect. This could well be a portent
of the impending demise of your motherboard and you might want to have
a repair techniciian check out the hardware in your system to see what
may have triggered this event and what the potential future
consequences might be.

Good luck
