I have thought about venturing out on my own often, but there are many
stumbling blocks. Money being one of them. Unfortunately, when the
company closed that I did have the IT position in, it was only 6 months
after purchasing a new home. Now, I live paycheck to paycheck just to pay
the mortgage, keep the utilities on, and eat at least one decent meal a
day. There's no way I could do consulting work during regular business
hours.
Since I have always been an employee, I would not even have any idea on
how to get a business like that started.
While we've moved OT in this group, you can feel free to contact me via
email (see my munged sig below) and we can chat about ideas and ways to
get started.
While you are working, you can still provide services in the evening and
on weekends, I've worked 7d/w for the last 4 years building the
business, started without any clients and without any money to start
with, and have things going in the right direction. It's not as hard as
it seems, looking back, it's just something that takes a LOT of personal
drive, personal determination, and being able to work when you don't
really feel like working.
When I made this choice, to quit my last job, that meant I didn't
qualify for any unemployment benefits, had a wife and 3 kids (and three
+100# dogs) and a unhealthy amount of debt, but I made it work and now
my company provides support and design services for companies all over
the US and India. You can do it, and you can get started in the evening
and weekends, it will just take a little longer that way.
