If you have any doubt, call Microsoft and verify.
If the email contains a phone number don't use it, search for a valid phone
number on their web site.

Did you enter a contest or otherwise do something that fits exactly the
?Email you recieved?
If not probably no.

If yes, there should be some information on the Email that can make it easy
to verify the legitimacy.

Call Microsoft and berate them for emailing you such stupidity, and in
future not to email you such things again. Let them know that an
organisation with such credibility in honesty as they have, will in all
circumstances be doubted with such tall claims. Given that, make sure their
denial holds no power with you, then hang up on them. Make it their problem.

This organisation has more hide that a Jersey cow. No wonder MS has a closed
door policy cause they can ooze under them they're that low.

I have known of a few that have received similar letters after having done
something previously.
I am not sure about the exact wording of the Emails, but Microsoft has
programs that fit the OPs description.
Your own ignorance of such programs does not make them nonexistent.

Since the OP did not quote anything, I am not so quick to assume it is bogus
based on the minimal information provided.
I leave the assumptions to you.
The information the OP did not give is necessary before coming to a
definitive conclusion.
I wait for facts before judging.
