Microsoft Access backup size question

We are using Access to build a database of equipment located in our school.
I noticed, for some reason, the last time I did a backup the backup size was
about 1/2 the size of the original database. I have tested both databases
and all of the records appear to be there and intact. All reports, forms,
tables, and queries are working properly. There probably is a simple
explanation for the difference in size of the database and its backup but
could someone please explain. I've not been able to find this and its
causing some concerns about the validity of the data with administrators. I
would appreciate an answer very mich. Thanks.

PS As far as I know we have not done any reorganization, replication, or
compacting of this data. If it has been done it was done by someone who is
not a regular user of the database. Again Thanks.

The built-in backup database function within access actually creates a
compacted and renamed copy of the original database. Access Databases
have tendency to
bloat with use. They should ideally be regularly compacted. Try
compacting the original file and then taking a backup - the file sizes
should then be very close to, if not identical to, each other.
