I have a friend who is able to communicate with me over my speakers. She
says I can do the same by going to Tools and taking the mic off mute but I
can't find the setting. Can anyone help me?

Do you have a Microphone connected to your PC ? All PC's
have a input jack on the sound card panel to accept one. The
Pink colored socket is the PC-99 standard for Microphones.
If you do have a Microphone you have to use the Audio mixer
(Recording mode) to select it as the default input device and
make sure it's not Muted and that the volume slider is at a level
appropriate to be heard but not distorted.

That takes care of setting the mic but then what? I am not sure if the OP
wants to communicate live or voice mail are you?

Wasn't stated and would be difficult to do a "Carnac, and the
envelopes in the Mayonnaise Jar" routine. Looked like the first
of a handful of postings to get things going/sorted out.

A while back I remember trying an internet phone application that worked
fine. There was a delay/echo so headphones were needed but it worked fine.
There might be some new applications that do this better now.

No I do not have a microphone. My friend says I don't need one?? She also
communicates with her sister and she says she doesn't have a microphone.
Where do you find the microphone setting anyway??? Is it the Sound and
Audio Device? I made sure it is not set to mute on my PC.

Doesn't need one ?, not sure how that works. It might help to know
what program or technology is being used to communicate. The mic
settings are available from the Sounds and Audio Devices properties.
Located under the Voice (TAB), Voice recording category. Clicking
the Volume button will bring up the Windows Mixer where you can
select Microphone and adjust volume.

I'm not really well versed on things like VOIP ( Voice over IP ) and
other similar technologies. Maybe someone who understands what
you're trying to do can be more helpful.

LOL By any chance are you in the same room? LOL

I would suggest the easiest and cheapest thing to do it use Netmeeting.

You need a microphone. It may be embedded in the laptop or monitor, but
you DO need an audio input device of some type.

One way would be to run Netmeeting. This application is what will allow you
to communicate over the internet with camera and or microphone. When this
program runs it will detect a web cam and mic allowing you to make
adjustments.
Netmeeting is a free application that comes with windows or can be
downloaded a from Microsoft.

If you post what computer you are using it might help. You should get
familiar with your sound card properties and learn to make adjustments.

You can also use Windows Sound Recorder in your communications folder. If
you have a microphone this will show it and allow you to make simple sound
files like a voice recorded. This application is very simple but you can
make recordings and attach them to email like a voice mail message.

Mics are real cheap if you don't already own one.

Typically there will be a hole for the "sound" to go into the microphone
just below a surface facing the user. Do you have a laptop? If it is a
separate monitor there will also need to be a microphone cord going from
the monitor to the PC. You could also look at the documentation for you
system.

No, I'm not using a laptop. I use an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2 G, 512
Ram, XP Home Edition.
I'll try Netmeeting and thanks for the link Cliff. That's to all of you.

She has a Webcam and it has a mike. I just don't get why she insists I have
one built in? If I do, I sure can't find it.

An inexpensive headset Microphone can be bought for
~$15 at Office Depot/OfficeMax or Staples.
