I have a Labtec AM-242 that works in Windows 98, but not
in windows XP (I have a dual system). I have a Micro ATX
VA Mainboard, with an integrated Hardware soundblaster
and Direct Sound AC97 Audio.
I have tried the microphone test under control panel,
audio and speech tab. It doesn't work.
In troubleshooting, they mention using speech recognition
program, but I do not have one, and there is none listed
in my Windows XP features. I am using Windows XP PRO
Can anyone help me.

Two questions. What sound card are you using and are you sure you have
this one selected? Second, have you selected the microphone as the
input device on the recording page and make sure it is unmuted if you
want to hear it back out of the speakers?

Thanks for your reply to my bulletin board cry for help.
You asked what sound board I had. I have a MS-6368
motherboard from Micro-star International which has an on-
board sound controller. It uses the VIA VT686B
chipset (552BGA).
What really puzzles me, is that my microphone
works when I boot up in Windows 98, but not in Windows
XP. The speakers work fine in both.
I have checked all the settings I can find. I
mainly find them when I open Sounds and audio Device
Properties in control panel. That is also where I
have been testing the microphone.
You also suggested that I check that the
microphone is selected as the input device on
the 'recording page', and to make sure that it is
unmuted. I do not know what you mean by the 'recording
page'
I appreciate whatever help that you can give me.

Click Start-Control Panel-Sound and Audio Devices-Advanced under Device
Volume. If Microphone doesn't exist already, add it by clicking
Options-Properties-check Microphone and click OK. Now uncheck the Mute
box under Microphone. Now click Options-Properties-Click Recording,
check the box next to Microphone and click OK. Now make sure you have
chosen Microphone as the input and then see if it works.
