Microphone problem

My sound does not go through the microphone and out. I have tried in
help and Microsoft support but have not found much about it. The
easiest is to say the cheapy microphone is not working but how I can
make sure that this is the hardware which is failing.
Well a silly question: Can I use an ordinary microphone from my
amplyfire? i mean is it possible to cheat the PC as I do not have any
driver?
