Micromedia flash player update

I got this on my screen a window, wanting to update this flash player.
Says it supports the latest web content.
Faster interactive media performance.
Improve web security.
What is this? I don't even know where it came from or what files it changes. Is this malware?
any help will be appreciated.

It's not malware. It plays various kinds of animations, it's used for
games, cartoons, funny things, and inevitably billions of
advertisements that run in your browser.

It does constantly beg to be updated. I tend to ignore those pleas,
and click "Update later".
