Linda R.

Hello,
Ever since I upgraded AOL to version 9.0 (a couple of
days ago), I've had problems with my messengers. Every
time I log into AOL, I get signed out of messenger 6.0
and signed in again to Windows Messenger 4.7. I see that
Jonathan Kay's recommendation for messenger conflicts is
to disable Norton 2003's messenger scan feature. I tried
that and it works, but should I be concerned about
contracting a virus through MSN version 6.0 now that I've
disabled the messenger virus protection feature?

Thanks.

Greetings Linda,

Actually the Norton protection only uses Windows Messenger -- it wasn't scanning MSN
Messenger 6 to begin with.

Also, turning off this "feature" in Norton Antivirus doesn't actually provide any less
protection. All this "feature" does is automatically scan files after you've received
them -- assuming you haven't changed any of the other part of the Norton Antivirus
configuration, the files received through either Messenger client will be automatically
scanned when you run/view them -- even with this "feature" off.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Jonathan! However, I've just
realized that I still have my problem. It seems the only
way I can prevent MSN messenger 6.0 from logging out and
Windows messenger from logging in whenever I switch AOL
screen names is to uncheck the box in Windows messenger
options/preferences "allow this program to run in the
background." Without Windows Messenger running in the
background will I lose whiteboard, application sharing,
etc.?

Thanks again.

Hi,

You're very welcome. I've heard of this problem before, unfortunately I don't have [any way
to access] AOL 9, so I haven't yet been able to determine exactly what's going on to cause
this. However, by unchecking this option, you will *not* loose any of these functions (you
only loose them if you actually uninstall Windows Messenger completely).

Jonathan,
Thank you so much for your help. The AOL techs couldn't
solve this (I spoke with several both online and on the
phone), but your recommendations have solved the problem
as far as I can tell. Thank you again!
