Messenger version conflict

Brendan

I see this is a major issue.

I'm running XP Home. I had Messenger 4.7 until I got a
message warning of dire consequences if I didn't upgrade
immediately to Messenger 6.0.

I upgraded, only to find both icons in my tray and both
programs on my system. I manually deleted version 4.7.
All seemed well.

Now I'm trying to set up a friend's computer so that she
can call on me for Remote Assistance, and I keep being
told that I don't have the latest version of Messenger
when all indications are to the contrary.

I used the same version 6 installer file on my friend's
computer and hers has no trouble recognising the version
and allowing Remote Assistance. The problem is at my end.

I've tried repairing version 6 using the installer file -
no success. I've tried uninstalling 6, going back to 4.7
and then reinstalling 6 in the hope program files will be
written properly - no success. (By the way MS, you need
to put the prefix "un" in the uninstall dialogue box). I
thought of trying the un/install game with version 5 too,
but it's an 8 meg download.

This ought to be so frigging simple:

New version of program overwrites old.

It works.

What is your problem Microsoft!

Greetings Brendan,

MSN Messenger 6's Remote Assistance feature *requires* Windows Messenger (4.7 or 5.0) to
still be installed in order for Remote Assistance to work.

When you reinstalled 4.7, did you keep it installed before trying Remote Assistance again?

Hi Jonathon,

I'm testing it out now - trying Remote Assistance in
version 6 with version 4.7 remaining in the background.

It'll take me a while to set up another PC with another
Messenger account, so if it's an easy task, you could
help by finding me online.

Otherwise I'll report back. I suspect it's still going to
tell me I don't have version 6 installed.

Hi Brendan,

Well I'm not getting into the Mac vs Windows debate here *grin*. Although I wouldn't mind
having a Mac for testing Mac-related Messenger issues, but anyway.

Does your friend happen to be using any type of Internet sharing or a router? If so, in
order for Remote Assistance to be successful, the router/internet sharing must support
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), a number of them do, but may require a firmware update from
the router manufacturer and/or toggle an UPnP switch in the router configuration.
