Does anyone know how to use the "net send" command to
(legitimately) send an instant message to a friend (on
the internet) who you know is online using their ip
address?

The format

net send (ip address) Message

does not seem to work

As far as I know you need a third party app to send netsend messages over
internet. It's made for internal use on a network/lan. I've seen a few out
there going for anywhere from $200-$800. These are the programs the spammers
use.
This site is having a "sale" today:

Visited the site you mentioned and they claim to use the
Dos net command (on left of screen on their home page) to
send the messages and not to alter your operating system

This suggests that it must be possible for the ordinary
guy (without $200 to spare) to be able to do it too
(unless perhaps they DO make changes to your system
without telling you)

Thanks for your reply

I think it means that the program uses the messenger service to receive the
ads that the third party app sends using the netsend command. Without the
program netsend can't send over the internet. I may be wrong, and someone
correct me if I am.

The message I get is...........(while online and
connected to the internet and with messenger service
running, and access allowed to "net send" through
firewall)

C:\>net send xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Hi
An error occurred while sending a message to
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The message alias could not be found on the network.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2273.

And the intended recipient naturally sees nothing on
their screen

Try a third party application. Also you didn't tell us if you have the
Messenger service running. If they have the Messenger service running. And
finally they could have it blocked by the firewall that comes with XP?

Here's a free third party application for you.

Best of luck and I hope that solves your problem or gives you enough
information to solve it.
