I am another one that is suddenly having issues signing
into anything using a passport account.. Hotmail email
and messenger particularly.

It says the username/password is invalid, yet it works
fine from another XP system. other valid
usernames/password also fail on teh "bad" system.

it seemed to appear after an automatic update was loaded.

Any thoughts/ideas on where to start ? all of the help
items don't assist with this.

Fixed it from a previously posted answer... seemed to be
a need to register softpub.dll

Do the following:

Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK

Greetings Ian,

Actually this should have already been registered, registering it again simply fixes if it's
been broken in the registry in some way.

The softpub.dll is a component for Internet Explorer's SSL (Secure Socket Layer) support
which provides authentication to Messenger and other .NET Passport services (like Hotmail).
