Hi,

I run Windows XP home and have installed Messenger 6
which I am pleased with. The version of Messenger that
Windows Xp came with (4.7 I think) has always sat quietly
in the background.... up until now. I disabled it from
the Start Menu accessed through msconfig and it has not
caused any problems, although my Norton Firewall informs
me that it tries to access the internet about every two
minutes of so, but still no problems.

I have recently installed a new piece of software and now
I receive the following warning message in a dialogue box
about every minute: "msmsgs.exe - Application Error" "The
instruction at 0x038.... referenced memory at "0x8f1...
The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the
program".

Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this problem,
perhaps to close Messenger so it does not try to access
the internet but not remove it?

Thanks for your help.

Tim.

Greetings Tim,

You mentioned Norton Firewall -- Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed as well? Norton
added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict
with Messenger and cause this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the
Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open
Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger
and click OK.

OK. Thanks Jonathan.

Thanks for answering that question and for your help with
this problem. I am very grateful to you.

Best Wishes,

Hi Tim,

Actually your Messenger *is* still protected. You *DO
NOT* loose any protection by turning
off this feature. All the feature does is simply scan
files when you receive them (via
Messenger) before you actually run the file. Even with
this "feature" off, when you run the
file you just received, the normal Norton engine will
scan it anyway. This is a convenience
feature only -- it does not make you any less protected.

To answer your question however, this is the only
solution to this problem (besides removing
