When asking for remote assistance, my Messenger 6.1 gives
me an error that says I need to update to the latest
version of messenger to receive assistance. An HTML link
is provided, that links me to a download for V4.7.
In short, my messenger 6.1 is acting like it is messenger
4.7.
I've uninstalled 6.1, run scripts to remove 4.7 and have
reinstalled 6.1, with the same result.
I'm thinking the removal of 4.7 was never *really*
completed with the script (RunDll32
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove).
Can anyone tell me how to *completely* remove 4.7 and 6.1.
Or, if this won't resolve the issue, what may?

Greetings Brad,

This won't resolve the issue -- what you're seeing is by design. You *must* have Windows
Messenger installed (but you don't have to use it or have it running), in order to use Remote
Assistance in MSN Messenger 6.1.

You can find Windows Messenger 4.7 here:

Strange, and interesting.
I guess I never realized one was *windows* messenger, and
one was *msn* messenger. Assuming that software releases
are numbered sequentially, I assumed that *msn* messenger
6.1 would by default have all the good features of
*windows* messenger 4.7
Which brings me to another question:
If the remote assistance is only available if *windows*
messenger 4.7 is installed, why is it offered in the drop
down menu of *msn* messenger 6.1, if it's not available
without *presumably* an older version of a similar
software?

i'm only guessing here, but there's a dll that controls the remote
assistance that ships with windows messenger and not with msn
messenger, but no one at microsoft has bothered to include it in msn
messenger. Its really a usefull function thats being killed by the
programmers just as its starting to be widelly used but the common
folks.

So that why we still need windows messenger for that function.

But it causes several malfunctions if both are installed.

Mainly the connect/disconnect problem at boot time : one wants to
connect and the other gets disconnected, and round they go while the
other gets disconnected. its very problematic and i hope there's a
cure fo it soon. And no the group policies isn't a cure, its only a
"band aid" on the booboo, b/c the assisted computer needs to know how
to run these 2 .reg files in order for WM to launch when needed only.

And the reason why its still included as a function in msn 6.1 is for
ease of use. i'm thinking with some future release of msn messenger we
won't need windows messenger (the function will be native to msn, WM
could be uninstalled safelly)

One can only hope and pray its soon!

Sorry for the rant but this problem has been going on for years now,
it is high time someone fixed it once and for all.
